Last night, in a biker bar, I overheard two men discussing what distinguished “realist” fiction from more “experimental” work. Although one shouldn’t generalize, I never expect bikers to be literary critics. Well, these were literary critics, and good ones—in fact, they’d bought their “hogs” with royalties from a book they’d co-written, Feminine Desire In Jane Austen.

When God first asked me to pen a new introduction to this planet’s most Holy Scriptures (and The Book of Mormon), I was slightly humbled—even flattered. Some would say blessed.

But when He started talking deadlines and announced his discontent with my writing by putting frogs in my bed and locust in my backyard, I knew we had a problem. But he really pissed me off when He started redlining stuff out in Microsoft Word. Like the part where I refer to the Book of Mormon as “Jesus Fan-Fiction.”
